Spatial sound experiments – where else than in the Kölner Philharmonie! For his Köln premiere, French composer Philippe Manoury is creating complex sensory listening experiences by having musicians positioned in the space communicate with each other in ingeniously layered sounds and patterns. The soprano Sophie Karthäuser will demonstrate the much-lauded versatility of her voice in Mozart’s concert arias, fascinating musical character studies in which the orchestra becomes the imaginary stage for the singing and a reflection of the soul. We do not know the occasion for which Mozart composed his last three symphonies. They seem to have arisen from an inner urge: to open up space, broaden horizons, get to the heart of things. What emerged is music that reaches far beyond any classical conception, deeply personal and not understood at all by his contemporaries. Symphony No. 40 is one of the three: the brilliant work of a driven spirit who may already have sensed that his time was running out.
