»Entrückung« from: string quartet No. 2 F-sharp minor (1907/1908) based on a text by Stefan George

“Only those who know longing know what sorrows me!” The words of Mignon, the enchanting girl from Goethe’s Wilhelm Meister novel, captivated the young Franz Schubert; in several Lieder, he lent expression to their emotional life. In Stefan George’s verses, the lyrical I dissolves completely in music: “I dissolve into tones – circling – weaving.” With Giacomo Puccini’s ‘Crisantemi’, the string quartet is laying flowers on the grave of a genius who died young: with his lover he looks into the sunset one more time.
