“Two people are walking through a bare, cold wood; the moon keeps pace with them and draws their gaze.” The sound of the fin de siècle is shaped by the poems of Richard Dehmel. Arnold Schönberg was inspired by his poem ‘Verklärte Nacht’ [‘Transfigured Night’] to create a tone poem without words. His friend and colleague Karl Weigl composed ‘Ein Stelldichein’ [‘A Rendezvous’] for voice and string sextet. In these works from the turn of the last century, one can still divine from afar the shadow of Johannes Brahms: he experienced his breakthrough as a composer with his string sextets.
