The “summer of the century” – that what writer Florian Illies called that of 1913. With four unusual song settings, this programme invites you to experience the pioneering mood of a new epoch. Ravel and Debussy address the poetry of Symbolist poet Mallarmé with contrary means. Stravinsky, who observes the compositional “competition” around Mallarmé with amusement, follows suit, embedding the voice in a small instrumental ensemble. The common reference point is Arnold Schönberg’s key work of the 20thcentury, “Pierrot lunaire”, in which he reconciles cabaret and avant-garde: “And I feel that I am definitely approaching a new form of expression.”
